absolute beginner 'learn at your own pace' online course

Missed out on learning ballet as a child? My Absolute Beginner ‘learn at your own pace’ online course for adult ballet students is suitable for those who want to learn ballet from scratch in proper detail and in depth, and in your own time/at your own pace. Perfect for those who are too nervous to attend a ballet class in person, or for those who don’t have any ballet classes available where they live, or for those who simply prefer learning online!

I take you step by step through all of the basics of ballet, right from the start. From posture, to turn out, to the positions of the feet and arms. I go through common mistakes and challenges that a lot of my absolute beginner students find when starting to learn ballet. And I take you through all the exercises that are generally done in a ballet class at the barre (at a simple, slow, beginner-level pace), as well as a couple of extra dance-y exercises in the centre. I also show each exercise from different angles, so that you can really get it!

"I’ve started the beginner’s course & just finished watching the video about arm positions and hand articulation ☺️ It’s really in-depth & helpful. I think I’ll have to go and re-watch some of them to make sure i really get it! Thanks again ❤️” - Ivy Jing.

What you need for the course:

A Google Drive account to access the course content

As much space as you have at home and a flat floor surface like floorboards or tiles (rather than carpet). But if you only have carpet, that is ok!

Activewear and socks

A chair to use as a barre (or you can use your kitchen bench)

My videos are uploaded in HD 1080p but will require a stable internet connection and up to date browser to view them in high quality.

What is in the course:

You will have access to the course on Google Drive for 12 months. You can also download the videos.

Total video course content is 7 hours long and the content is designed for you to watch and practise with and learn over and over and over. The course also includes 2 workbooks: a question and answer ballet technique workbook, and a workbook with photos of some of the basic ballet positions and common mistakes to look out for.

After you purchase, you will receive an email from Google Drive within 24 hours giving you access to the course. Please check your junk mail or email me at zara@kwanstudio.com.au if you don’t receive it!

Meet your teacher, Zara Lim

I trained full-time at the Australian Ballet School (ABS) under the guidance of Irina Konstantinova, Lisa Pavane, Tang Xiuyun and Wang Jiahong.

During my 4 years at ABS, I had the privilege to perform in Swan Lake Act II, in Leigh Rowles' Nutcracker, Coppélia and in Morning Melodies. I also had the opportunity to extra with the Australian Ballet.

However, instead of completing my studies at ABS, I decided to move into law. I hold a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and Bachelor of Arts (Chinese, French) from La Trobe University. Over a 5-year period, I worked as a commercial litigation and intellectual property lawyer at both global and boutique law firms (K&L Gates and Aptum), and also served as associate to the honourable Associate Justice Efthim at the Supreme Court of Victoria.

In 2021, I came full circle and returned to my first love, ballet. As well as running my own adult ballet classes, I have taught ballet to children since 2022, first at the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet under director Christine Walsh AM, which is now Australian Academy of Classical Ballet, under directors Jenna Roberts and Joe Caley. I have completed my teacher training for junior levels under the Ballet Conservatoire syllabus (Russian Vaganova) and am also a qualified teacher for Progressing Ballet Technique (ballet-specific strength conditioning method).

I am passionate about teaching ballet to both adults and children, and bring well-rounded and varied life experience to my teaching! After many years away from ballet, I have very muchly rekindled my love for ballet, and train multiple times a week myself with Adrian Dimitrievitch and Sakura Shimizu. I find it meditative and believe everybody should be able to participate in ballet!

If you would like to view videos of me dancing so you can see who is going to teach you, as well as footage of the classes, I have plenty at instagram.com/zaramlim.
